elfboy what what

I've been meaning to write out a profile and backstory for Callahan for quite some time; everything has been laid out in my head for months (I made it all up before I actually got him), but I always wanted to have it here for people to look at. Right now, Callahan's character is mostly a mystery to anyone who reads my blog, and I should like to change that.
And I'll change that now, with this very long post of much doom. If you are one of those readers who isn't here for the dollie action, then this one isn't for you. However, it's also very much full of writing action, so if you're interested in my writing, then I suppose you'll like it...but I digress.

profile:
(You might want to read about his past before reading this, or the reasons for his personality changes might be a bit confusing.) As a child, Callahan had a fairly average personality. He was treated well by his parents (perhaps a bit spoiled, but nothing too bad), and was obviously intelligent. After the faerie queen orphaned him and took him away with her, the magick that she placed on him caused him to become rather air-headed and foolish, but after a few too many years of that, his personality was changed to mirror that of the queen's, and he became, among other things, a power-hungry, rather narcissistic, fairly dangerous creature who wouldn't hesitate for a minute to take advantage of anyone for his own gain. I have yet to explore what he was like after the magick that made him this way was undone.
past: Callahan's story takes place in a "faerie" realm of sorts, which is
made up of five large countries, along with expanses of forests, oceans, and smaller islands. The five main countries are called Serythim, Harlekrin, Myrrh, Cavender, and Alyssum. Each country is home to a particular species of creature, or in some cases, groups of similar species. Before my story begins, the countries were ruled by their own kings or queens; each country was large enough to both satisfy its occupants and to dissuade any outsiders from trying to take it over. It was this way for many years (in any history books written in my realm, this period of peace between the countries would be referred to as the Quiet).

Callahan was born at the end of the Quiet in Cavender, the land of the Elves. He was the son of an Elfin lord. During his childhood, Cavender was at war with Alyssum, the land of the faeries (the faerie queen was openly attempting to conquer Cavender). When he was ten years old, the faerie queen won the war, and arrived in Cavender (which was by then decimated) with the intention to select the most beautiful of the elves to be her personal servants. However, the adult elves had lost most of their youthful looks due to ten years of war, and so the queen instead took a selection of young Elfin children. Callahan was her favourite out of this selection, but while many of the other Elves allowed the queen her pick of their sons and daughters, thinking that their children might at least be well-fed and kept safe in the queen's palace, Callahan's parents refused to give him up. They were killed by the queen's personal guard so that the queen might have her way. The queen then placed a spell over Callahan in order to blur his memories of life with his parents and tether him to her mentally.

In Alyssum, it was considered fashionable to have some sort of a rare, exotic animal (i.e. a bird or a small wildcat such as an ocelot) as a pet, and to keep it with you always on a leash, and the queen decided that she would use Callahan for this purpose. A golden chain was put around his neck, which made it so that he could not leave the queen's palace unless she lead him out of it by the aforementioned chain. For the first few years, this worked out well for the queen: the spell that she had placed upon him was strong, and he had no desire to escape, nor any sorrow for his dead parents whatsoever. Callahan lived in a state of ignorance, completely unaware that any magick was being used on him at all (an unfortunate side effect of this spell was a shallow, naive, girlish air about him, which lead the members of the queen's court to nickname him "La-La"). At this time, as more of a joke than anything else, the queen gave Callahan the title of Avra-lira, the faerie version of "Princess", a title usually given to the queen's daughter, or, if she had no daughter, a young faerie girl of noble blood whom the queen had selected to take the throne after her death.

However, faerie magick, when used for too long on an individual, has a tendency to do strange things, and by the time Callahan had turned seventeen (at which point he had been under the influence of magick for seven years), his personality had been twisted to resemble that of the queen's - arrogant, self-indulgent, deceitful, and power-hungry. His view of the queen and everyone else mirrored her view of him; they were all people he could use, nothing more. Meanwhile, the queen also experienced unintended effects: her memories of how she acquired Callahan and what she wanted him for began to fade, and she began to rely on Callahan for advice. He took advantage of this and began to spread discord among the members of the queen's court, creating arguments between people, flinging rumors and false accusations around, and generally making it so that no one knew who to trust anymore. It was then all too easy for him to offer the queen solutions to the problems he'd created, and to essentially begin to rule through her, while continuing to act very naive and foolish in order to avert suspicion. Members of the queen's court, however, soon began to realize that Callahan was not what they'd thought he was and began to speak up against him. They were swiftly executed for slandering the "Avra-lira", who realized that having such a title was valuable protection against members of the court, who were technically "lower" than he was.
Eventually, the queen's actual advisor attempted to undo the spell that she had placed on Callahan, and after much difficulty, succeeded. The queen was convinced to get rid of him. It was planned for two of her guards to kill him. He learned of this plan before it could be carried out, however, and ran away (the charm on his chain had also been undone). After a day or so stumbling through the forest, he managed to exit the patch of land on which the palace was situated, at which point all remaining traces of the magick on him were broken and vanished at once. He came out into one of Alyssum's open fields with no idea how he had gotten there, but slowly he remembered everything that had happened to him...and more importantly, all the horrible things that he'd done.

I haven't the foggiest what happened after that. Perhaps I add it in someday. I apologize for that obscenely long paragraph at the end...my blog won't let me divide in half. And this post is so dreadfully long that I am afraid it will eat me.
