happy birthday mum!

♥ You get a flower, a faerie, and many magic sparklies. Love, Bella. ♥

it's right there in black and white

There are some lovely new leather chairs in my living room as of late. There's also a lovely Christmas tree that creates a rather nice atmosphere for taking photographs. I think I'm getting a bit better at dealing with indoor lighting. I also finally got around to experimenting with black and white effects, which was something I'd been wanting to do for a while. In short, all is well.

As a little Christmas-season bonus, you also get two photographs from forever ago that I finally decided to edit. These were from August, I believe. Callahan's wig hadn't been cut yet, so it's covering his eyes, which makes him look a bit cross-eyed, but that second picture in front of the white wall is still one of my absolute favourites.

Callahan is a B&G Sapphira boy from here.

merry christmas a bit late

Christmas really snuck up on me this year. Last December I had a Christmas picture drawn and coloured by the 20th, and had it saved in a post so all I had to do was click 'publish' on Christmas Eve. This year, I found myself wanting to do other things, such as running around trying to buy everyone's gifts and eating icing, instead of shutting myself up in my room with my computer and trying to draw something in a hurry. I was planning on drawing Joker and Elena, though, in case you were curious. Ah, well. Next year I will be more on top of things (I should hope). Meanwhile, I hope all of you dear hoptoads had a Merry Christmas and ate plenty of icing yourselves.

Also, I'd like to show you the lovely necklace my older sister bought for my Christmas gift as well. Loki is jealous of me already and she doesn't even know I have it. It is that wonderful.

I have honestly not taken it off since I received it. Well, I did take it off to shower, but other than that, it is my constant Joker-face companion. *proposes marriage to it*

I do apologize for the blurry-ness of the picture. It was taken with my webcam because I am quite lazy about uploading things off of my digital camera.

i am posting too much today, yes

I just came across a fanfiction entitled "The Long Road."
The summary of this fanfiction was, "McGee is about to embark on the longest, toughest road he could possibly think of in hopes to find a happy ending."
And I stared at it for a moment, thinking,
McGee? As in, NCIS-McGee-McGee?
Well, yes. It was McGee. That McGee.

To summarize it further, the story consisted of McGee adopting a child for whatever reason. He also had a dog which he named after Gibbs and which kept dragging him around by the leash whenever he tried to walk it.

I had to tell you that because I found it inexplicably hilarious. There have now been two silly mini-posts in one day...and while I'm here, I might as well tell you one more inexplicably hilarious thing: I asked my mum today if she had any ideas for what Elena might call the Joker. I have several nicknames that he has for her, but so far she has none for him, and as I cannot see her calling him "Joker" all of the time, I needed suggestions. My mother suggested "Joey" and "Funny", like "Honey", but he's the Joker, so it's "Funny."

Yes, it is.

and did you people know

Today is Nero's birthday.

You should all wish him a happy birthday.

And then you should all eat ice cream, because he apparently invented it in a way.

Look it up on Google if you do not believe me, my hoptoads.

another one of these

I stole this one from Emmy Cicierega, just so all of you know.

1. Put your iTunes (or any other media player you may have) on shuffle.
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
3. YOU MUST WRITE THAT SONG NAME DOWN NO MATTER HOW SILLY IT SOUNDS!

IF SOMEONE SAYS "IS THIS OKAY" YOU SAY?
"Disturbia" - Rihanna (How amusing of me.)

WHAT WOULD BEST DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?
"Just A Dream" - Carrie Underwood (Well, it's really quite a sad song about a dead husband, but going with just the title it sounds nice, I think.)

WHAT DO YOU LIKE IN A GUY/GIRL?
"Memories" - Within Temptation (Interesting.)

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE'S PURPOSE?
"It's Good To Be In Love" by Frou Frou. (Didn't this song come up as the answer for another life-purpose-type question on the first music meme I did?)

WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO?
"Don't Tell Me" by Avril Lavigne. (A snippet of the lyrics to that song: Don't try to tell me what to do/Don't try to tell me what to say/You're better off that way. Seems about right for me.)

WHAT DO YOUR FRIENDS THINK OF YOU?
"Too Little Too Late" - JoJo. (B-b-but last time they thought I was hot! What happened, my friends?)

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT VERY OFTEN?
"Zero to Hero" - Disney Hercules soundtrack (Why, yes, I must admit, that is always on my mind.)

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR BEST FRIEND?
"I'm Going Home" - Daughtry (Last time, this was to be played at my funeral. Odd...)

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PERSON YOU LIKE?
"Goodbye To You" - Veronicas (Well, isn't that strange.)

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE STORY?
"Uninvited" - Alanis Morissette (Just remember what I said before: I will continually show up uninvited at grand parties and subsequently charm the pants off of rich people.)

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?
"My Skin" - Natalie Merchant. (That's one aspiration that I suppose contains itself to my subconscious. Perhaps in the back of my head, I really want to be skin. My skin, specifically.)

WHAT DO YOU THINK WHEN YOU SEE THE PERSON YOU LIKE?
"Fast Car" - Tracy Chapman (Perhaps I'm going to steal this person's car. Perhaps my liking this person is a ruse to make off with his car, and then go really fast.)

WHAT DO YOUR PARENTS THINK OF YOU?
"Girlfriend" - Avril Lavigne (That's just not correct.)

WHAT WILL YOU DANCE TO AT YOUR WEDDING?
"Thanks For The Memories" - Fall Out Boy (Please, no. I do not want to dance to Fall Out Boy at my wedding.)

WHAT WILL THEY PLAY AT YOUR FUNERAL?
"Hanging By A Moment" - Lifehouse (How intriguing. I don't know what to make of it.)

WHAT IS YOUR HOBBY/INTEREST?
"Voldemort Is Awesome" - Draco and the Malfoys (I just got my daily morning laugh out of that.)

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SECRET?
"Davy Jones" - Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack (Oh, dear. Now everyone knows the truth. *sigh* You can come out from under my bed now, Davy.)

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR FRIENDS?
"This Woman's Work" - Kate Bush (That makes me giggle, but I don't quite know why.)

WHAT'S THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN?
"Shake It" - Metro Station (I suppose it's the worst thing that could happen if one was, say, a baby, but it sounds quite fun to me.)

HOW WILL YOU DIE?
"Leaving" - Jesse McCartney (I'll just leave one day and vanish into the mist, and that will be the end. Also, I am embarrassed that this song is on my iPod, but I like dancing to it privately in my room.)

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU REGRET?
"Remember When" - Alan Jackson (That's a little too sad for sentimental old yours truly.)

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH?
"You'll Think Of Me" - Keith Urban (I just laughed, so I suppose it is true.)

WHAT MAKES YOU CRY?
"Can't Fight The Moonlight" - Leann Rimes (Who knows, this might make sense. Lately I cry at strange things.)

WILL YOU EVER GET MARRIED?
"Sarajevo" - Trans Siberian Orchestra (I do not know what that means in the least.)

WHAT SCARES YOU THE MOST?
"Don't Ever" - Missy Higgins (Highly unlikely. That is the most calming song I know of, second only to the Winnie the Pooh song.)

DOES ANYONE LIKE YOU?
"Beautiful Disaster" - Kelly Clarkson (This is the song I associate most with Nero/Acte, which is my favourite real-life relationship ever. If Acte hadn't existed, I would have made her up like I did with Enya and Elena.)

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE?
"Possession" - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix soundtrack (Curiouser and curiouser...)

WHAT HURTS RIGHT NOW?
"100 Years" - Five for Fighting (That's fitting, somehow.)

And that is the end of that. Do this one too, Mummy.

the making of 'you never know'

When I posted this picture, I promised to show my progress step by step in another post "within a few days". Well, it's about two weeks later and I've just now gotten around to it. Aren't I punctual? Anyhow, this was done in Photoshop CS2, with a Wacom tablet. I am proud to say that I painted it on more than one layer, as you'll soon see.

First layer: I sketched out the basic outlines for the picture, first in a light gray, then with a black over the lines I wanted to keep. The few splashes of colour you're seeing are the results of me thinking, "Well, I suppose I'll just paint this on one layer! Yes, that's what I'll do!" and then subsequently deciding, "No, that is not what you'll do, you painting fool! Make another layer!" Which brings us to...

Second layer: Using my outlines as a guide, I filled the picture in with the base colours I wanted to use. This was done very messily, but it didn't matter in the end, as all the blobby bits got either edited out or simply covered up.

Third Layer: I discovered a lovely way of making semi-realistic hair. I did this by first putting lots of streaks of a lighter brown over the base brown colour, and then lots of streaks of darker brown. I blended them together using a drop shadow brush with the base brown colour, and then used the dodge and burn tools to make more detailed shadows and highlights. I did the same for the Joker's hair, but with greens and yellows. I randomly put the outlines for the Joker's shirt pattern on this layer, too.

Fourth layer: All of the shading and highlighting was done on this layer, using the drop shadow brush for mostly everything. I dodged and burned a bit here, too, but not so much since it tends to discolour the colours in a way I don't particularly like, especially when you're shading skin.

Fifth and final layer: I did a bit of last-minute shading, touched up the background, and made sure that none of my original black outlines were showing. I put a Soft Light filter on this layer to make the colours pop a bit more and darken everything up slightly.

And then, I was quite finished. You can see a larger version of the finished product right here, where it was originally posted.

my mp3 player is full of disney magic

I do love song memes, and this one happens to be quite interesting. I think I'll make my mum do it soon; she has an iPod of her own and should put it to good use.

Rules:
1. Put your music player on all your music, then shuffle.
2. Press forward for each question.
3. Use the song title as the answer to the question even if it doesn’t make sense.
4. With the answers, give your own comments on how it relates to the questions.

1. How are you feeling today?
Prince Ali - Disney Aladdin soundtrack
Well. That made me laugh. And I have no comment other than that.

2. Will you get far in life?
Uninvited - Alanis Morissette
I believe this means that I will indeed get far in life...by showing up uninvited at rich peoples' parties, and then somehow gaining their favor/charming them out of their money until I'm the one throwing the parties.

3. How do your friends see you?
A voice recording of Augustus reading Quo Vadis came up for this.
They see me as an Ancient Roman? How intriguing.

4. Will you get married?
Who You'd Be Today - Kenny Chesney
I'll take that to mean that I won't get married, and people will wonder who'd I'd be today if I had married. Or perhaps it's the other way round. We'll see.

5. What is your best friend's theme song?
Listen to Your Heart - Roxette
Interesting. I suppose Cissa is an independant, listen-to-your-heart type.

6. What is the story of your life?
It's Good To Be In Love - Frou-Frou
I do like that. I suppose I am metaphorically in love with the business of living.

7. What was high school like?
Sakura Kiss (Piano Version) - Ouran High School Host Club soundtrack
High school, for me, was like soft, slightly sad piano music? I agree, and I'm not sure why.

8. How can you get ahead in life?
Saving Me - Nickelback
Saving myself in order to get ahead, eh? Sounds accurate.

9. What is the best thing about your friends?
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
The best thing about my friends is not actually their cars, but the speed which we drive at. Once we (well, I was driving, but I was accompanied by Rabastan) broke a go-cart by flooring it around a corner and smashing off the trail and into a tree. It was great, great fun.

10. What is in store for this weekend?
The Voice - Celtic Woman
Oh, I do hope I get a mystical revelation from an equally mystical voice this weekend. It would make my day.

11. To describe your grandparents?
Hey There Delilah - Plain White Ts
I do not know what to say about that in the least.

12. How is your life going?
Shadow of the Day - Linkin Park
I am in a shadow, hmm? Well, it's in the darkness that light is brightest and easiest to see.

13. What song will they play at your funeral?
I'm Going Home - Daughtry
That makes sense, but I would much rather they play something more fun. I want people to dance at my funeral, and don't wear black, please.

14. How does the world see you?
Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You - Damien Rice
Well, that makes me feel all lovely inside...and also a very small bit frightened. Is the world stalking me, perhaps?

15. Will you have a happy life?
Out There - Disney Hunchback of Notre Dame soundtrack
That does sound nice: me, out there, having a happy life. Oh, goodie.

16. What do your friends really think about you?
Hot - Avril Lavigne
That's....amusing.

17. Do people secretly lust after you?
Court of Miracles - Disney Hunchback of Notre Dame soundtrack
Gypsies lust after me, perhaps? I am entirely confused by this one.

18. How can I make myself happy?
I Wish I Had An Angel - Nightwish
Everything's better with angels, you know.

19. What should you do with your life?
So Close - Rascal Flatts
So close to what? A revolutionary discovery? World domination? The edge of a cliff? I am still figuring out all the things I shall do with my life, you know.

20. Will you ever have children?
We Don't Have To Look Back Now - Puddle of Mudd
Perhaps this means I won't have to look back and think, "Oh, I wish I had children."

21. If a man in a van offered you candy, what would you do?
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
I would go crazy on him, indeed!

22. What does your mom think of you?
Living On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
Whenever I think about this song title, I imagine a little civilization living on a pair of human hands folded in the praying position. Now I am imagining my mother imagining me living in that civilization.

23. What is your deepest darkest secret?
Another Night, Another Dream - La Bouche
I suppose my deepest darkest secrets are in my dreams.

24. What is your mortal enemy’s theme song?
Crush - David Archuleta
The only person I can think of who might fall into the mortal enemy catagory for me was a terrifying soul who had a most disturbing crush on me. This fits quite nicely.

25. What’s your personality like?
Viva La Vida - Coldplay
That song title happens to mean "live the life". I like to remind people to live for the moment. I like to do it myself. And so on.

26. Which song will be played at your wedding?
Potential Breakup Song - Aly & AJ
Oh, dearie me. That sounds quite ominous, but I suppose every relationship has the potential to end.

Do it, Mummy.

pray to my gods

In Callahan's storyline, the Faerie realm is its' world's version of India (while Cavender, the land of the Elves, is equal to England/Ireland), and therefore I imagine that Faerie religion is similar to Hinduism, and Elvish religion is similar to the beliefs of the ancient Celtics. Callahan, after being taken from Cavender, was converted at once to traditional Faerie beliefs, but he hardly knew it, due to the magick on him. Like many other things, the fact that he now prayed to different gods went right over his head. At any rate, he doesn't follow the Faerie religion's guidelines for life (like many high-born faeries in the Queen's court, he's a vicious little hypocrite who shows up at the temple to keep up appearances), and sometimes after he's done worshiping all of the Faerie gods, he has a feeling that he's forgetting someone.

Callahan is a B&G Sapphira boy from here.
If you're curious, you can read about his storyline here.
I keep changing the colour of his eyes in Photoshop.
What colour they really are, the world may never know.

you never know

This picture is really an exciting first for me. I sketched it in Photoshop and then built up the colour and shading with different layers, which was something I'd never done before. I'm pleased with the result - especially Elena's hair. I'll post a few screenshots of what this looked like at various stages during production within a few days, if anyone's curious.

and love is blind and that I knew when
my heart was blinded by you.

You all should pity these two. Miss Elena can't stop loving Mr. J., no matter how hard she tries to leave him, and he can't even love her at all - their relationship is just another twisted game to him. And she knows that. She knows she's a mad little fool for staying with him, but then again, she can't imagine what she'd do without him. As for him, well, any psychologist would tell her that she's fallen in love with the human equivalent of a ticking time bomb, but you never know, right? It's very confusing, you know, falling for a psychopath.

i'm so hollow, baby, i'm so hollow
i'm so, i'm so, i'm so hollow.

chiaroscuro and other things

Well, National Novel Writing Month is over! I finished with about 27,734 words (that's what I seem to remember; you can check my Nanowrimo profile if you want to see if I'm right or not), and so did not win, but I did finish my story. I finished before I was supposed to be finished, anyhow. I'm happy with my tale, though, and I plan to go back and edit it and perhaps even send it out to someone in the future. It's worth noting that this was the first story I ever actually wrote from beginning to end. Most of my writing is in pieces and awfully all over the place.
In other news, I drew a couple of pictures in coloured pencil a few days ago, and I thought I'd share those with you. The first one of the girl was just a random doodle, and the second one is Chiaroscuro from The Tale of Despereaux. I do love that rat, but I'm terribly afraid of what they seem to be doing to him in the Despereaux movie that's apparently coming out soon. The little synopsis on the Internet says Roscuro is a "good-hearted" rat who teams up with Despereaux, or some such thing like that. And I don't like the sound of that at all. I should like a slimy, evil, scheming Roscuro, with a nice sleezy car salesman voice, please.
